This is a legacy challenge that starts on my Abandoned Run-Down Farm.
Land at Auction
My name is Jade Fields. I am from Bridgeport, but I hate city life. It was crowded, and the air quality left much to be desired.
I moved to Alryne Valley about a week ago and have been renting a room at TexanSky Lodge. It is a stark contrast to Bridgeport. I think I’ll be happy here.
The climate is pretty mild. The spring and fall are nearly twice as long as the winter, and the summer is longer than the spring and fall combined. The entire year is 7 moon cycles long. I have always dreamed of owning a nectary.
Last week, I visited a run-down piece of land in the hills outside of town. I was shocked at how dilapidated it was, but it should be worth at least §70,000 once it’s cleaned up. I am ready and willing to do the work. A wind turbine on the property supplies electricity to the buildings. The biggest selling point was the Nectar Making Machine in the barn. The previous owners said that it works, but I have my doubts. Once I grow some grapes, I will find out for sure. I’m glad that I am handy. I might be able to coax it back to life. I purchased the property at auction for §15,000. I have named it Fields of Gold.
When I moved in, I found a cat in the barn. His name is Elijah. He’s very friendly. I filled the metal bowl in the barn with cat food from the store. I intended to get a cat eventually, and finding Elijah saved me the time and trouble of dealing with the pet shelter. He has a scratching post and a worn-out catnip mouse that he likes to play with.
There was an old clunker in the barn and an inventor’s workbench in the loft. I didn’t go up there as the floor looked very unsafe. I’m surprised the workbench hadn’t fallen through the floor and crushed the clunker below.
The inside of the home isn’t much better than the outside, but at least the structures are sound for the most part. The kitchen contains three old counters, a sink, some pans, and old canisters containing who knows what.
There’s a rusty fridge in the corner. I plugged it in, and it worked. I found some dried-up grapes in the refrigerator, which I will plant as soon as I can clear a patch of ground for them.
A pantry off the kitchen contains canned goods inside a cupboard. The produce in the baskets has gone to seed, so I have more to plant.
Two chairs in front of the fireplace in the living room were held together with duct tape. A stack of crates sits next to the staircase.
The bathroom is filthy and contains a pile of wet, mildewy clothing. When I have an area cleared outside, I will burn them with some grass, shrubbery, and a small dead tree. The ash should help replenish the garden with nutrients.
Upstairs, I found more crates on the landing, two empty, good-sized bedrooms, and a tiny room with a single bed and more dirty clothes. The bathroom has only a toilet and a sink.
I did have to replace a few light bulbs, but all of the lights in the house work. On the porch, there is a rusty washing machine and a very weathered rocking chair. I found two more piles of clothing, one on the porch and one near the old clothesline.
Upon further investigation, I found two fenced areas for planting behind the house. There is a track circling the outside of that fence. I believe it could be used for a tractor. Unfortunately, it will be a while before I can purchase one.
I located another semi-fenced area with two beekeeping boxes hiding in the hydrangeas. When I opened the boxes, I discovered they were both active hives. In the back corner was a stand of corn and a junk pile along the fence.
I started by clearing a path to the house, the clothesline, and the beekeeping boxes. It took me all day, and I was sore, but it was worth it. I hauled the grass and brambles to the back garden. When I was finished, I harvested the apples from the tree in the garden and ate one for dinner. I put the rest of them in the refrigerator.
I hung the wet clothes from the bathroom on the line. I figured I could use them as rags.
I read the newspaper, and after using the facilities, I went to bed. I didn’t have time to wash the bedding, so I slept in my clothes on top of the covers.
