Marsden Farm – 1

A New Beginning – Narrated by Loni, unless otherwise specified.

~texansky~ This is my first time doing the Farming Challenge with a Twist by PianoAshes [Piano_angel on the forums]. She provides the lot with an elderly father, Fred, and a teenage son, Leon. The home lot with the family members can be found at Fred and Leon Mars Homestead. The lot is run-down and overgrown with weeds. The home is beyond filthy and has seen better days. Read on to discover what my teenage Sim is up against. I plan on publishing this story on Wednesdays at 14:00 US Central Time – 19:00 GMT.

I made some changes to the Sims. I gave Fred a different look, and he now has a teenage daughter in my story.

Meet the Marsdens:

Loni Marsden:

~texansky~ Leon had a change of gender, grew out his hair, and bought a new wardrobe.

~texansky~ I cut Fred’s hair and shaved his face. He has a few new clothes as well.

Week 1: Sunday

Loni:
Things had been so difficult since Mom died. Dad’s health had been declining and he was unable to work anymore. When we lost our home, an old army buddy of Dad’s offered us a place to stay.

When we arrived in Appaloosa Plains, Tate Curley met us at the bus station. He drove us out to the property, and boy was it a sight! The entire property was overgrown with weeds and thistles. A long dead oak tree stood forlornly next to the house, and a broken wagon sat in the corner of the property. A weathered clothesline was just outside of the laundry room. There were crates stacked at the edge of what used to be a field and a large rusty barrel towered over the meager woodpile behind the house.

Tate: I know it isn’t much to look at, but the house and porch are sturdy and safe. I picked this up as an investment last winter. I haven’t had time to do anything with it. You can live here rent-free for as long as you need to. All I ask is that you pay the utilities while you live here. If you can turn this into a working farm, and you would like to buy it, we can negotiate a contract-for-deed with zero interest and reasonable payments at that time.
Fred: That’s very generous of you, Tate. I am indebted to you.
Tate: It hardly makes up for your cover fire that helped our squad get on the chopper. I’m just glad you were able to make it onboard as well. Here’s a little something to help you get started.

Tate handed Dad some bills and hugged him. I stood by watching as the two spent some time reminiscing about the war. They hadn’t seen each other in years, so it took some time to catch up.

When Tate left, Dad handed me the Simoleons.

I counted the bills. We started the day with §500. I went to put the money in an old piggy bank I found on the mantle. When I opened it up, I found §100 inside!

This place is a pigsty! I hardly know where to begin. I’ve decided to start with the laundry, so I have clean clothes for school tomorrow. I don’t want to make a bad impression on my first day. At least Dad found the rocking chair on the big porch. Maybe he’ll stay out of my way.

Screenshot-3

Just great! The washer decided to break after the first load. Now I’ve got to fix it before I can do any more laundry. I’ll hang the sopping clothes as soon as the washer is functioning again.

Screenshot-4

Before I have a chance to hang the clothes, some crazy gal in a llama suit rings the doorbell and drops off a basket of stuff from her university. Like I can afford to go to college! I haven’t even graduated yet. And now she wants to chat? I don’t have time for this. I chased her off.

Well, at least I’ll have something to wear tomorrow. I’ve got to fix the kitchen sink before I mop the floor. And Dad will be hungry soon, so I better clean the counter and make lunch.

Screenshot-7

Loni: Dad! You know the doctor said you are not to do anything strenuous! Why are you cleaning the counter? They just delivered a bookshelf. Go read something.

Fred: All right. But I feel so useless.

Loni: You can pay the bills when they come due. I put the money in the piggy bank on the mantle.

I hope the §125 for the used bookshelf and books is worth it to keep him occupied. Now to tackle that sink.

Screenshot-8

I finished the sink and mopped up the water on the floor. Then I cleaned the prep counter and made an autumn salad for lunch.

After we ate, I went to use the restroom and Dad had clogged the toilet. To top it off both the sink and tub are flooding the bathroom!

Screenshot-10

I didn’t have time to clean the toilet, and had to sit on that disgusting seat! I am so grossed out now! If I’m going to be presentable at school tomorrow I need to take a bath. I fixed the tub and cleaned it. Now to relax.

Screenshot-11

That bath was so refreshing! It’s midnight already? I’m going to sleep like a rock. I’ll haul that junk out of my room later. I should start a garden tomorrow.

Screenshot-12

Family coffers: §475.

Week 1: Monday

I managed to get most of my garden planted before school. I just have cocoa beans left to plant. I went through the crates in the backyard and found a sprinkler. I hooked it up and it works!

Screenshot-13

I forgot to put away the salad last night. I hate waste. Dad had to fend for himself for breakfast today, and I went without.

Screenshot-14

While I was at school, the neighbor came over and cleaned up the yard. He bought the stack of crates, a burning barrel, and a busted wagon for §100. He left the money with Dad. He even cut the dead tree into firewood! We should have enough to last the winter now.

Screenshot-15

I barely recognized the place when I got home! Apparently, there was a mysterious gnome hiding amongst the weeds near the front stoop. Who knew?

Fred: We got the bills in the mail today. I sent in a payment of §126.
Loni: Ok, that’s not too bad.
Fred: You got some seeds in the mail. Here you go.
Loni: Thanks. Where did this cat come from?
Fred: Her name is Angel. We adopted her from the shelter today. The lady just dropped her off. She’ll keep me company while you are at school.
Loni: I’d better buy her some stuff then. At least she’s got food for now until the other stuff arrives. I’ll go online and order her some things at PetsSims.

The total came to §305 for a scratching post, a bed, a crate of pet toys, and a litter box. I had a coupon code for §27 (sold the old cat dish 😉 ), so the final cost was §278.

Screenshot-16

I filled the cat dish for §10, then cleaned the stove and made a meal of mac and cheese. The downstairs is starting to look livable, despite the piles of dirty laundry.

Screenshot-17

After dinner, I hung out another load of laundry and got to work planting the cocoa beans and the seeds that arrived in the mail that day. It was dark by the time I finished.

Screenshot-18

Angel’s already stalking her catnip mouse. I think she’ll be great at keeping the mice out of the house.

Screenshot-19

The eggs and cheese I consigned brought me §912! It’s hard to believe there was that much stored in the fridge. I’m glad it hadn’t spoiled before I had a chance to sell it. I left a dozen eggs and eight wedges of cheese for our use. We won’t need any more than that for now.

I completely forgot about the leaking sink upstairs! It’s starting to drip into the downstairs! I finished my bathroom to-do list and decided to splurge on a shower. I can save water and it will take less time to get cleaned up. It cost §925.

Screenshot-20

We only have §148 left in the piggy bank. We barely have enough to pay the bills the next time they come due.
