Camping Challenge

This challenge was created for The Sims 3.

The goal is to earn enough Simoleons to build and furnish a three-bedroom home in 21 days or less – before your Sim reaches adulthood. This is a short challenge and there are no points involved. You either complete the challenge within 21 days, or you fail.

NOTE: As this is 21 game days, the lifespan should be set to normal. If your Sim doesn’t have 21 days remaining until reaching adulthood, you should us NRaas Master Controller to set his absolute age to 0. With some planning, it’s possible to complete this challenge with just the base game.

You can use the tent from World Adventures or use the sleeping bag from Generations, and use the outhouse from the Movie Stuff pack.

If you want to do this challenge with only the base game, you could put a bench on the lot instead of a tent or a sleeping bag and use the facilities on the community lots.

I chose to use only items from the base game, Generations, Pets, and Supernatural, as well as the Movie Stuff pack) so this challenge doesn’t require the entire game and can be played on a potato. You can load the Pets if you wish, but you may only have one cat or one dog.

Start a new game in the town of your choice. I picked Sunset Valley for my first play-through.

Create a Sim and place them on an empty lot of any size. I chose a 40×40 close to the park.

Add the following to the lot:

One landscaping tree of your choice
If you have Supernatural or Pets, add a 7×7 garden fence with a gate
– this is to keep out zombies and critters that will destroy the plants
The garden area must be no larger than 5×5 with one plant per square
– this allows for 24 plants with a border and sprinkler
– no overcrowding allowed
– once the trees are mature, they may be moved to the yard if you choose
– all trees must initially be planted in the garden until they mature
The Sims Scouts’ Classic Camper tent – from World Adventures
– or a sleeping bag from Generations
– or a bench if playing base game only
The All-in-One Outhouse if you have Movie Stuff
The portable fire pit
A bicycle rack and a bicycle of your choice (I chose the NostalgiCycle)
If you have a pet or plan to adopt one
– add a pet bowl and pet toys for your furry friend
– no litter box – cats can use the great outdoors
– no beds – pets can sleep on the ground

The goal is to have the bare minimum for camping and a bicycle for getting around.

My Camping Challenge Starter, shown below, can be downloaded in my studio on the Exchange. It takes up a 12×13 area on a 30×30 lot.

Use a cheat to leave your Sim with only §50 to cover Monday’s bills.

You are not allowed to have a job in town until your 3-bedroom home is built. You can register as a self-employed writer, gardener, or angler as you only make money from your efforts. You may sell their camera, university basket, and the time portal if you wish.

You may earn Simoleons by gardening, but you cannot expand the garden or have more than 24 plants. If you have 24 plants and want to upgrade one of them, you must pull up the old one and plant a new one in its place.

You may earn money in the following ways:
– By collecting metals, gems, insects, etc.
– Metals may be mailed away to be smelted.
– You may send gems to be cut to increase their value.
– Insects can be donated to the science facility for Simoleons.
– Garden harvest and fish must be sold to the grocer.
– You may dumpster dive to collect items to sell or to furnish your home.
– You may earn Simoleons by painting, but you must buy the easel first.
– You may earn Simoleons by writing, but you can’t buy a laptop until you have built
your kitchen and have a place to put the computer.

You must have a minimum of §5,000 to start building. Your first build must be a single 5×5 room with one door and one window. This will include a kitchen along one wall, a dining area, and a bookshelf.

After that, you are not allowed to build anything else until you have enough to add a living room, bathroom, and one bedroom (§10,000 to §15,000).

The only exception to this is if you have the tent and your Sim starts a family. In this case, you may add a 5×5 nursery with a crib, a high chair, a potty chair, and a single bed. You may add toys and other items if you wish. The parents must still sleep in the tent or sleeping bag until their bedroom has been added.

Once you have a one-bedroom home, you may add on at any time to get your three bedrooms. The nursery is a separate room and doesn’t count as a bedroom for this challenge.

    1. Bree, thanks for your interest. It’s a fun little challenge that only takes 3 Sim weeks to complete. Just enough to keep you occupied, but not so long that you get bored. Let me know if you try it and what you think. Comments are always welcome.

      1. I’m right in the middle of another challenge right now and as soon as I have it finished I plan on doing this one. It seems to be simple, short and sweet and I like them like that. Thanks again for sharing.
